Redy Rahadian obtains his inspirations from anywhere or anything. “Everything can somehow inspire me. But most of the time, it comes from my own emotions.” Being angry, sad, or contemplative can result in sculptures when it comes to Redy. “So, I can still recall what I've been through when making these sculptures.”

Speaks from the Heart

His art senses were kept alive by his continuous activities during his leisure time, such as drawing and making sketches. “Europe is the right place to sharpen our sense of art, with so many buildings, areas, and beautiful places as models. Every now and then, I made drawings and even sold my artworks there,” Redy recalls, laughing at his experiences.

He noted how art in Europe can develop immensely due to the high awareness Europeans have about art. “You can create your own art anywhere, and nobody looks down on you. People passing by would appreciate them and even buy them. Art is already a way of life.”

Unfortunately, the situation in Indonesia was not as ideal. Redy's decision to become an artist was a major step, moving from a bright future in automotive design to a more uncertain one as an artist. This became even more challenging after his decision to marry Mia Ira. Redy is grateful for his wife’s unwavering support and patience for his chosen path.

“I see in Indonesia, people often face two hard options: to earn money from work they hate or to do work they love with minimal earnings. I've found what I love, and I don’t want to let it go,” Redy states. Despite the price to pay, he believes it is worth it.

“Back then, the situation might not have been supportive for artists, but things are improving. People are beginning to appreciate sculpture art, using it as icons and embracing it as a lifestyle. Exhibitions are also capturing the attention of collectors and investors,” he notes.

Redy remains focused on his work, believing that appreciation will come in time. He hopes to improve people's sense of art by sharing his knowledge with children to awaken their awareness and appreciation for art.
