Redy Rahadian - 2025 - Painted Steel

Redy Rahadian places a cluster of his signature human figures, compressed within the vein-like core of the form, while countless smaller leaves accumulate around them to construct the larger body. The work reverses a familiar hierarchy: rather than humanity inhabiting nature, humanity becomes embedded within it. It emerges as a condition of interdependence, where individual existence is inseparable from the living systems that contain it.

The sculpture’s elongated leaf form carries a further philosophical tension between fragility and permanence, it unites materials associated with endurance and forms associated with growth, decay, and renewal. The human figures gathered at the center resemble a hidden memory within the body of the leaf, suggesting that identity itself is rooted in relationships rather than autonomy. Each smaller leaf contributes to the integrity of the whole, just as each life participates in the making of a community, a culture, or an ecosystem.
